The mass restructuring follows the publishers&#8217; <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/square-enix-plans-aggressive-use-of-ai-to-create-new-forms-of-content-141602313.html\" data-i13n=\"cpos:2;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:2024 announcement;cpos:2;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2024 announcement<\/a> that it planned to &#8220;aggressively&#8221; apply AI to its development process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 leading-7 text-[18px] md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0 charcoal-color\">The total number of employees being laid off isn&#8217;t yet public, but <em>Video Games Chronicle <\/em>writes that over 100 developers in the UK could be impacted, possibly up to 140. The number of US developers caught in the layoffs is still unknown. In a <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hd.square-enix.com\/eng\/news\/pdf\/20251106_01_en.pdf\" data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:slide deck;cpos:3;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">slide deck<\/a> for investors <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/square-enix-undergoes-mass-layoffs-as-it-reorganizes-to-consolidate-development-in-japan\" data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:spotted by IGN;cpos:4;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">spotted by <em>IGN<\/em><\/a>, Square Enix characterizes its &#8220;Overseas Structural Reform&#8221; as part of its goal of &#8220;consolidating development functions in Japan.&#8221; The deck also notes that Square Enix is particularly interested in automating &#8220;70 percent of QA and debugging tasks in game development by the end of 2027&#8221; with artificial intelligence, which could be one reason it&#8217;s trying to eliminate roles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 leading-7 text-[18px] md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0 charcoal-color\">Engadget has contacted Square Enix to confirm its restructuring plans. The publisher appeared to play some kind of role in <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/gaming\/people-can-fly-cancels-two-games-and-lays-off-developers-220310524.html\" data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:project cancellations;cpos:5;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">project cancellations<\/a> at developer People Can Fly earlier this year, and before that, it initiated <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.videogameschronicle.com\/news\/square-enix-confirms-us-eu-layoffs-as-part-of-restructuring\/\" data-i13n=\"cpos:6;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:mass layoffs;cpos:6;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">mass layoffs<\/a> in 2024.
