Stewart and Daulton also discuss the role of AI in Stewart\u2019s work, emphasizing ethical use that respects talent and enhances efficiency without replacing human roles.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>What Brandon Studios Is Working On<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daulton introduces Stewart and invites him to talk about Brandon Studios.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSo where do you want me to start?\u201d Stewart asks. \u201cFrom the beginning?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYeah, what was the inception?\u201d Daulton clarifies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI was born in 1995,\u201d Stewart jokes, and Daulton laughs. Stewart shares, \u201cBrandon Studios was originated in 2023. Prior to that, we were an agency. We serviced talent, we were focused on social media.\u201d He mentions that his experience at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/awesomenesstv\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Awesomeness TV\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Awesomeness TV<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> helped him gain experience in building a brand. \u201cSo now we\u2019ve got 120 million active users across all of our 63 channels. One of those channels is a paywall of $5.99 that we call Brandon TV, and we just bought, as of 10 months ago, a 30,000-square-foot studio with two sound stages that we call Brandon Studios, which is kind of like our home.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSo you\u2019re living the dream,\u201d Daulton says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stewart chuckles. \u201cSort of. It\u2019s a little stressful. I\u2019m not going to lie.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWell, nobody said dreams aren\u2019t stressful,\u201d Daulton notes. \u201cYou\u2019ve got to do some work and put some skin in the game if you\u2019re going to be successful.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stewart agrees, and Daulton wonders what Brandon Studios is currently working on. Stewart says its focus is on reality TV. \u201cSo the whole world of <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Love Island<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and all of the things that are becoming very popular, we\u2019re actually taking some of the legacy stars from back in the day from shows like <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dance Moms<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bring It!<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Little Women<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and we\u2019re bringing them back into the forefront. We\u2019re kind of giving them a second swing at a career on television. And so we\u2019re taking their captive audiences that they\u2019ve already built, we\u2019re marrying [them] with the audiences that we have, and we\u2019re creating content that\u2019s very interactive. It\u2019s very gamified, and it kind of allows the fans at home to be involved in the story-making process.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Interactivity as the Key to Gaining Viewer Loyalty\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat techniques are you using to engage people and bring them in?\u201d Daulton wonders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stewart asserts that the biggest technique is interactivity, and the streaming industry isn\u2019t harnessing it to its full potential. \u201cI think what makes us so successful is the fact that we\u2019re able to have an idea on Monday, produce it by Tuesday, Wednesday, and it\u2019s out by Thursday, Friday. The fans obviously love that. It\u2019s easier when we\u2019ve got talent that\u2019s in our backyard, but we also produce in Atlanta, Georgia; we produce in Houston, Texas. We produce in Jackson, Mississippi, [and] Los Angeles, of course,\u201d he explains. Stewart believes Brandon Studios is unique \u201cbecause we\u2019re actually listening to the audience and we are curating content around what they want to see.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daulton prompts Stewart to talk more about interactivity. He says scraping the online comments is important\u2014they can be negative, and it\u2019s possible to listen to them too much, but it\u2019s important to harness them in a positive way, Stewart believes. If a commenter wants to see more of a particular star or storyline, the company will try to make it happen. \u201cWe also have a very active social media vertical on our streaming app as well. We\u2019ve got hundreds of thousands of users that are active,\u201d Stewart adds. \u201cWe actually just last month\u2014I have not released this yet\u2014but we just hit 2.2 million active subscribers last month on our streaming app.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daulton congratulates him. Stewart notes that giving viewers the ability to influence decisions empowers them to get more involved, and Daulton agrees.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>The Inevitable Use of AI\u2014Keep It Ethical<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daulton asks if AI is part of Brandon Studios\u2019 process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019re testing a lot of different verticals within AI,\u201d Stewart says. \u201cWe\u2019re also trying to be conscientious of being fair to talent as well, because we don\u2019t want to overexpose [ourselves] to too much AI and lean on AI. That\u2019s not really fair for whether it be talent or whether it be editors, for example, or other key players in our organization. But AI is not going away. And so we\u2019re trying to find ways that we can utilize it to create more efficiency, but also, again, be fair to the market.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daulton is intrigued, noting that \u201cethical AI that respects the creator is kind of a passion project for me.\u201d He applauds Stewart: \u201cYou\u2019re trying to respect your talent, trying to make sure that you\u2019re using AI in a way that respects the talent, [and] maybe is a bit of a force multiplier for them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou nailed it, yeah,\u201d Stewart replies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daulton adds, \u201cAnd while at the same time, using it to make your bottom line more efficient.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stewart speaks more about his strategy: \u201cOne thing that we made sure that we did when we brought the talent from their respective networks prior is we actually gave them residuals. So now these unscripted stars who\u2019ve never had residuals before, if they had the same residuals that Jennifer Aniston did on <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Friends<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, people like an Abby Lee Miller from <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dance Moms<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> would never have to work again.\u201d He emphasizes that he\u2019s saying this with respect for Miller. \u201cAnd so that\u2019s why I think it\u2019s really important to protect the talent\u2014not only the talent, the producers and the team behind the camera too, so that when AI does come, there\u2019s still ways for them to be monetizing the content that they made years ago.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>The Future of AI and Jobs<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daulton brings up his LA friends who were part of the recent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.streamingmedia.com\/Articles\/News\/Online-Video-News\/New-Hub-Research-Findings-Old-Shows-Are-New-Again-as-Consumers-Navigate-Streamers-and-Strikes-161553.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Writers Guild of America strike\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Writers Guild of America strike<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and he and Stewart go off on a brief tangent about where Daulton is from. He notes that his screenwriter friends were \u201crightly\u201d worried about AI, but \u201cmy position then was, AI\u2019s coming. It\u2019s going to be great long-term for the industry, but absolutely the guilds need to be standing up for the talent, whether it\u2019s the writers or the actors, and making sure those terms and deals get locked down now, because otherwise it takes one bad actor to set the stage.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stewart nods along. \u201cAnd by the way, it\u2019s not just our industry as you all know. I mean, how many times have we gone to ChatGPT and asked them a legal question, right?\u201d He says using it is normal now. \u201cAnd I think we just have to be conscientious as we\u2019re harnessing it, understanding that there\u2019s still human beings out there that need to be employed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daulton chimes in, \u201cWell, and it\u2019s not just employing human beings for employment\u2019s sake, having that human in the middle or having the human behind the AI or the AI supporting the human.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGreat point,\u201d Stewart agrees.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daulton cites director James Cameron\u2019s assertion that AI won\u2019t cost people their jobs; it will make them more efficient. AI will take care of the \u201cgrunt work.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThat\u2019s the hope, right?\u201d Stewart says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>AI and Learning<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNow, there\u2019s an honest conversation to be had about whether or not replacing that grunt work impacts the pipeline of talent coming up,\u201d Daulton cautions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWell, could you imagine if we had AI in school when we were solving math equations?\u201d Stewart looks at the camera. \u201cI would be dumb as a box of rocks.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daulton talks about how his teenage children use AI. He is strict about the family ChatGPT account, and he teaches them to use it ethically. \u201cThey want to use it in a very targeted way because they want to establish their own skillset,\u201d he notes. \u201cAnd so they\u2019re using it to research, but not necessarily to write.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stewart wonders, \u201cBut do you trust our whole society to do that?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daulton says yes, with a caveat: \u201cI think we have to incentivize it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCorrect,\u201d Stewart agrees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mogawdat.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Mo Gawdat, former chief business officer of Google X,\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mo Gawdat, former chief business officer of Google X,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> speaks on this topic, Daulton shares. Gawdat insists that AI is here to say, but, Daulton says, \u201cThere are definite risks with bad actors, and we just have to set the tone to make sure that the good actors win.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daulton and Stewart both stress how important this outcome is to them. \u201cI feel like I\u2019m kind of a part of the younger Hollywood generation that\u2019s coming in, and it\u2019s helping shepherd the new era. And like I said, AI is not going away, and it\u2019s time to start embracing the new age instead of pushing it out,\u201d Stewart says. This is why unions and parents are important, he notes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Social Media as the Second-Most-Important Issue<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daulton suggests wrapping up the conversation with the question, \u201cWhat\u2019s one major trend you think everybody in the industry should be thinking about over the next 18 months?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stewart tries to think of another topic besides AI, because that\u2019s the obvious answer. He settles on social media. He addresses viewers, \u201cI would say if you guys out there are not creating on social media, even if you\u2019re just someone who owns a boutique shop or someone who has their own product and is working out of their living room or a content creator, there\u2019s a lot of ways to get out in front of people and to teach people about your product, about your content, and to get them involved in what you\u2019re doing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He mentions that he competed on <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Idol<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in season 12, and he\u2019s seen the music industry change \u201csignificantly\u201d in this regard. He advises, \u201cContinue to push and to utilize the social media kind of world as a conduit to what you want to do. Don\u2019t be scared of it.
