Fautier advocates for a balanced approach to technology adoption, considering both cost efficiency and the expansion of services to a global audience.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>AI as a Universe Expander<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fore-Siglin and Fautier begin their conversation by appreciating the laid-back nature of the Streaming Media conference, where people have time to sit together and have deep conversations. Fautier calls IBC a nightmare because of how rushed it feels, but he acknowledges that the industry needs both high-intensity experiences and smaller experiences.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fore-Siglin asks Fautier to talk about his current focus, so Fautier introduces his new company, The Media League, a media and entertainment business consulting agency for technology companies. The company is engaged with AI; it organized a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/easy-like-sundai-morning-unpacking-kawhc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"SundAI breakfast at IBC\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SundAI breakfast at IBC,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cwhere we would gather 50 individuals in the room and could start to demystify what is AI, who is using it, why they use it, what are the use cases, [and] what do you think the industry is going to develop over time?\u201d he shares.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fautier brings up a Streaming Media panel on subtitling and dubbing, when someone said AI \u201csolved it.\u201d But \u201cthe guy in the operation room\u201d is saying \u201cit\u2019s not solved. We still need to have human [input], we need to be compliant, we need to make sure for this type of delivery network we are okay, [and] for this other type, we are not okay. So that\u2019s what the industry needs to figure out. There is not one size fits all. There are many shoes, many fits,\u201d Fautier asserts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He continues, \u201cAnd hopefully it\u2019s not only about cutting costs, it\u2019s also about widening the scope. If you say \u2026 you can do <a href=\"https:\/\/www.streamingmedia.com\/Articles\/Editorial\/Featured-Articles\/Maximizing-Content-Value-with-Subtitles-Dubbing-and-Localization-168564.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"maximizing content value with subbing dubbing and localization\">dubbing<\/a> for five languages, how about the 125 remaining? If you can dub it with the best effort, good enough quality, people will love it.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AI is \u201calso about expanding your universe,\u201d he reiterates. It\u2019s important to ask, \u201cHow can we change the very well-defined workflow we had until now?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>A Proposal to Go Back to Regulators<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNow, technically, we\u2019ve been able to do a number of things for years and you mentioned dubbing is one thing,\u201d Fore-Siglin says. \u201cHaving worked with the World Trade Center and having to of course hire numbers of real-time translators, I look at that as a potential opportunity. And yet you have things like Apple not doing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.streamingmedia.com\/Conferences\/Connect2025-Dec\/program.aspx#17673\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Localize It! AI Subbing and Dubbing for Live Streams at Scale\">real-time translation<\/a> in Europe because of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gdpr-info.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"GDPR\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GDPR<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> issues and some of the legal framework. So as we solve this technical side, where does the industry go to engage around the legal ramifications of it?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fautier provides this example: \u201cI am French and I spend some time with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.france.tv\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"France Televisions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">France Televisions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> project, where they have decided to go their own way because they couldn\u2019t find any type of technology that can fix their needs. So they did a homegrown system.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cKind of like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.seacam.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"SEACAM\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SEACAM<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> back in the day,\u201d Fore-Siglin notes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fautier says he heard a conference speaker who concluded, \u201cNow that we have a good understanding of the technology, we should go back to the regulators and tell them [we] wanted to have universal service. Stop these crazy requirements; we can\u2019t meet them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fautier continues, \u201cBut if the quality of translation is bad, this has a huge impact. So we need also to put some guardrails\u2014like any politician, prime minister, president, you need to have some oversight. Commentators of a soccer match, yes, maybe you can be loose, but \u2026 I know we have a president of the United States who speaks a lot. Maybe we should say, \u2018Can we check the tweets? Can we match the tweet with the talk because the guy says a lot of things and keeps changing his opinion.\u2019 So I think there is an opportunity for technology to go back to regulators.\u201d He believes this is possible because there is so much data now.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>\u2018The Internet Is the Limit\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fore-Siglin ties this proposal to \u201cthe days of codecs.\u201d He continues, \u201cWe of course used <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.streamingmedia.com\/Articles\/Post\/Blog\/JW-Players-Dave-LaPalomento-Talks-VP9-H.264-and-More-149709.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"H.264\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">H.264<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for video conferencing long before it became a streaming standard. But the simple fact that you had <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.streamingmedia.com\/Articles\/Columns\/Streams-of-Thought\/A-Look-Back-at-Streaming-Videos-2020-144237.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"MPEG\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MPEG<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.itu.int\/en\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"ITU\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ITU<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> says we need something that\u2019s universal across the board. And then we watched how the industry grew dramatically. So to your point, I think that\u2019s very well taken, going back not just to the regulators, but to the standards bodies and saying, Here\u2019s how we can get something. Because you don\u2019t want to be sitting in France and then go to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.streamingmedia.com\/Articles\/News\/Online-Video-News\/Why-Everyone-Is-Talking-About-xHE-AAC-159999.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"DRC\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DRC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and your translation doesn\u2019t work, especially if it\u2019s \u2026 slightly different versions of French.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fautier adds that technology companies want to sell worldwide, so this makes sense. He returns to the subject of subtitling and a challenge that operators face today: \u201cYou can do [subtitling] on the FAST channel and say on the fly, \u2018I can tell you exactly for all the different languages, I can do it on the fly because I have a niche market.\u2019 But guess what, you can do that on the set-top box &#8230; from ABC. And what is interesting is that you talk to a chip company [that] says, \u2018Yes, I can do it here.\u2019 You talk to hyperscale [and] they say, \u2018No, I have to do it there.\u2019 And the content provider says, \u2018No, no, no guys, you are wrong, it has to be done here.\u2019 So we need to orchestrate all those different elements of the workflow and say, \u2018Yes, we can do it in a different way.\u2019 But people need to talk. Today they all keep their cards very close to their chest.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fore-Siglin adds, \u201cAnd then you think about the satellite companies back to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eutelsat.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Eutelsat\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eutelsat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intelsat.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Intelsat\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Intelsat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, et cetera, where they had to build SAP in early on for those alternate channels. You literally, because of the hardware constraints, could only do three different alternate channels of audio. Now we\u2019re talking about, at a minimum, 20 different channels.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fautier sums up this discussion by saying, \u201cThe internet is the limit.\u201d Alternate audios are available at both cheap and premium levels, and with all of the technology available, operators should be making \u201cwise choices on what technology to apply for, what quality or service, and of course what price.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.streamingmedia.com\/Conferences\/Connect2025-Dec\/Default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Join us December 9-11 and tune in for more great conversations at Streaming Media Connect!
