The bans were reportedly put in place because the platforms were used &#8220;to organize and carry out terrorist acts,\u201d and commit fraud.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 leading-7 text-[18px] md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0 charcoal-color\">It&#8217;s not clear if either service is still accessible by using a VPN, but banning Snapchat and FaceTime fits with Russia\u2019s crackdown on communication and social platforms that started after the country\u2019s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/russia-blocks-facebook-183925073.html\" data-i13n=\"cpos:2;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:Facebook;cpos:2;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Facebook<\/a> and <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/twitter-block-russia-210603308.html\" data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:X;cpos:3;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">X<\/a> were blocked in March of that year, and <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/russia-bans-instagram-130215448.html\" data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:Instagram;cpos:4;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Instagram<\/a> was added to the ban list not long after. In 2024, the encrypted messaging app <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/social-media\/russia-and-venezuela-have-blocked-encrypted-messaging-app-signal-221433099.html\" data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:Signal;cpos:5;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Signal<\/a> was also banned, and more recently in July 2025, Russia threatened to block access to <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/big-tech\/whatsapp-should-prepare-to-stop-operating-in-russia-official-says-140044721.html\" data-i13n=\"cpos:6;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:WhatsApp;cpos:6;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WhatsApp<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 leading-7 text-[18px] md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0 charcoal-color\">Engadget has contacted both Apple and Snap to comment on the Russian bans. We&#8217;ll update this article if we hear back.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 leading-7 text-[18px] md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0 charcoal-color\">Banning or restricting these platforms is a way to exert control over where and how conversation happens in Russia \u2014 and prevent the spread of &#8220;LGBT propaganda,&#8221; if you believe Roskomnadzor&#8217;s reasoning for <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/gaming\/russia-blocks-roblox-citing-lgbt-propaganda-as-a-reason-180757267.html\" data-i13n=\"cpos:7;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:banning Roblox;cpos:7;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">banning Roblox<\/a> \u2014 but it might also be an attempt to drive people to use &#8220;MAX,&#8221; a state-run super app that offers services like communication, banking and document storage.
