Fossil fuels and the rest all play their part to make the world go around, but their role is likely to diminish no matter what happens. The International Energy Agency believes electricity\u2019s share of global energy consumption is going to <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/reports\/world-energy-outlook-2025\/executive-summary\" data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:double;cpos:3;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\"><em>double<\/em><\/a> in the next decade alone. You all know the causes: Electrification, EVs, data centers and AI mean the planet needs to dramatically increase its power generation, transmission and storage capacity. It\u2019s a shame, then, that the world is nowhere near ready to satisfy such an outrageous surge in demand.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading-mb col-body heading-text-style font-bold charcoal-color\">Re-learning to love the atom<\/h2>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 leading-7 text-[18px] md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0 charcoal-color\">The US has certainly spent the year opening doors to dramatically increase domestic energy production. Part of that has to give the signal that the US will embrace nuclear power in ways it hasn\u2019t for generations. This January, an executive order titled <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/documents\/2025\/01\/29\/2025-01956\/unleashing-american-energy\" data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Unleashing American Energy;cpos:4;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">Unleashing American Energy<\/a> included an instruction for the government to eliminate rules and regulations related to power generation. Its primary focus was to destroy environmental regulations limiting the extraction of oil, natural gas and coal, but also to remove roadblocks to the construction of new nuclear plants. Then, in May, a <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/05\/deploying-advanced-nuclear-reactor-technologies-for-national-security\/\" data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:subsequent order;cpos:5;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">subsequent order<\/a> declared a desire to ensure the deployment of \u201cadvanced nuclear technologies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 leading-7 text-[18px] md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0 charcoal-color\">As the driving force behind the AI push, big tech has made some high profile moves to buy up extra generation capacity. Meta signed a 20-year deal with Constellation to own the output of the <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/big-tech\/meta-signs-multi-decade-nuclear-energy-deal-to-power-its-ai-data-centers-144916645.html\" data-i13n=\"cpos:6;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:Clinton Power Station;cpos:6;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Clinton Power Station<\/a>, preserving the 1.1GW facility once its state tax credit expires next year. Microsoft has its own 20-year deal with Constellation to own the power generated by reactor 1 at <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/ai\/microsoft-plans-to-restart-the-three-mile-island-nuclear-plant-that-narrowly-avoided-disaster-161256442.html\" data-i13n=\"cpos:7;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:Three Mile Island;cpos:7;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Three Mile Island<\/a>, now renamed the Crane Clean Energy Center. On November 18, that project was also given the backing of the Department of Energy which <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/articles\/energy-department-closes-loan-restart-nuclear-power-plant-pennsylvania\" data-i13n=\"cpos:8;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:authorized a $1 billion loan;cpos:8;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">authorized a $1 billion loan<\/a>. But even without the backing of big tech, other mothballed reactors are being restarted, like the Palisades plant in Michigan. Earlier this year, the Department of Energy handed out a <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/articles\/doe-approves-sixth-loan-disbursement-restart-palisades-nuclear-plant\" data-i13n=\"cpos:9;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:$1.52 billion loan;cpos:9;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">$1.52 billion loan<\/a> to get the facility, capable of generating 800MW, back up and running.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 leading-7 text-[18px] md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0 charcoal-color\">Big tech is also betting on the future of nuclear power, signing deals with a number of startups looking to build out a new generation of reactors. Google, for instance, has backed <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/big-tech\/google-strikes-a-deal-with-a-nuclear-startup-to-power-its-ai-data-centers-201403750.html\" data-i13n=\"cpos:10;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:Kairos Power;cpos:10;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kairos Power<\/a> and its plan to build a series of small, modular reactors. Amazon, meanwhile, invested in X-Energy and has <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/big-tech\/amazon-reveals-what-one-of-the-us-first-modular-nuclear-reactors-will-look-like-180721637.html\" data-i13n=\"cpos:11;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:published plans;cpos:11;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published plans<\/a> for its own buildout in Washington State.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 leading-7 text-[18px] md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0 charcoal-color\">It\u2019s not just the US that is learning to fall back in love with nuclear power, as the rest of the world is also building out new capacity. The <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/world-nuclear.org\/information-library\/current-and-future-generation\/plans-for-new-reactors-worldwide\" data-i13n=\"cpos:12;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:World Nuclear Association;cpos:12;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\"><em>World Nuclear Association<\/em><\/a> says there are 70 reactors currently under construction across 15 countries. <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/world-nuclear.org\/information-library\/country-profiles\/countries-o-s\/russia-nuclear-power\" data-i13n=\"cpos:13;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Russia;cpos:13;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">Russia<\/a>, <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/world-nuclear.org\/information-library\/country-profiles\/countries-g-n\/india\" data-i13n=\"cpos:14;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:India;cpos:14;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">India<\/a>, <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/world-nuclear.org\/information-library\/country-profiles\/countries-a-f\/argentina\" data-i13n=\"cpos:15;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Argentina;cpos:15;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">Argentina<\/a>, <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/world-nuclear.org\/information-library\/country-profiles\/countries-t-z\/turkey\" data-i13n=\"cpos:16;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Turkey;cpos:16;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">Turkey<\/a>, <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/world-nuclear.org\/information-library\/country-profiles\/countries-o-s\/south-korea\" data-i13n=\"cpos:17;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:South Korea;cpos:17;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">South Korea<\/a>, <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/world-nuclear.org\/information-library\/country-profiles\/countries-g-n\/japan-nuclear-power\" data-i13n=\"cpos:18;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Japan;cpos:18;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">Japan<\/a>, and <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/world-nuclear.org\/information-library\/country-profiles\/countries-a-f\/brazil\" data-i13n=\"cpos:19;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Brazil;cpos:19;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">Brazil<\/a>, to name just a few, are all working on new reactors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 leading-7 text-[18px] md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0 charcoal-color\">China on its own is presently building 33 reactors and, as <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nuclearbusiness-platform.com\/media\/insights\/inside-china-massive-nuclear-expansion\" data-i13n=\"cpos:20;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Nuclear Business Platform;cpos:20;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\"><em>Nuclear Business Platform<\/em><\/a> reported earlier this year, greenlit a further 10 this April. That same report adds that China\u2019s policy of producing multiple reactors at a time has seen costs crater. You can add on a few more years if you include the necessary procedural steps that need to be undertaken before a single piece of concrete is poured. Consequently, any major shift in the US\u2019 power generation fleet will be measured in generations, rather than years. It\u2019s a concern that, for all of the attention nuclear power is getting, it\u2019s merely a smokescreen for a renewed push for fossil fuel extraction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 leading-7 text-[18px] md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0 charcoal-color\">After all, one major casualty from the Big, Beautiful Bill was the eradication of subsidies for the US\u2019 solar industry. As we <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/general\/trumps-big-beautiful-bill-is-a-middle-finger-to-us-solar-energy-152042835.html\" data-i13n=\"cpos:22;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:reported back in July;cpos:22;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported back in July<\/a>, the act has kicked the legs out from domestic solar panel manufacturing, handing renewable energy dominance to China. This goes hand in hand with the US Department of Energy setting up a <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/articles\/energy-department-announces-625-million-investment-reinvigorate-and-expand-americas-coal\" data-i13n=\"cpos:23;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:$625 million funding stream;cpos:23;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">$625 million funding stream<\/a> to revive America\u2019s coal industry and recommission old power plants. Or that it is also awarding contracts to grow America\u2019s <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/articles\/energy-department-awards-contracts-begin-refilling-strategic-petroleum-reserve\" data-i13n=\"cpos:24;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:strategic petroleum reserve;cpos:24;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">strategic petroleum reserve<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 leading-7 text-[18px] md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0 charcoal-color\">Back in September, Energy Secretary Chris Wright made the implausible claim to <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cqlz5p314z0o\" data-i13n=\"cpos:25;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:BBC News;cpos:25;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\"><em>BBC News<\/em><\/a> that fossil fuel extraction was nothing to worry about as fusion power would be on the grid in the next decade. Wright, himself the former CEO of fracking company Liberty Energy, was taken to task by a number of <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/tamu.edu\/doeresponse\/home\" data-i13n=\"cpos:26;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:climate experts;cpos:26;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">climate experts<\/a> for publishing a report riddled with \u201cmisleading or fundamentally incorrect\u201d assertions. Similarly, on November 20, the Department of Energy reshuffled its <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2025-11\/Organization-Chart-11.20.2025-2.pdf\" data-i13n=\"cpos:27;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:org chart;cpos:27;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">org chart<\/a> to eliminate several departments responsible for renewable energy and energy efficiency while forming the Office of Fusion.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading-mb col-body heading-text-style font-bold charcoal-color\">Solar\u2019s unstoppable rise<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"relative col-body mb-4\">\n<div class=\"relative\"><img alt=\"This stunning aerial view captures an  array of solar panels arranged in neat, parallel rows across the landscape. In October, the International Energy Agency <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/reports\/renewables-2025\" data-i13n=\"cpos:28;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:projected;cpos:28;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">projected<\/a> renewable energy will grow by 4.6 TW by 2030 \u2014 a figure equal to the combined generation capacity of China, the EU and Japan combined. 77 percent of that figure is expected to come from solar power alone, despite the loss of subsidies in the US and less favorable circumstances in China.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 leading-7 text-[18px] md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0 charcoal-color\">The domestic US forecast has been <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/reports\/renewables-2025\/renewable-electricity\" data-i13n=\"cpos:29;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:revised downward;cpos:29;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">revised downward<\/a> significantly as a consequence of its policy choices. But despite this, the obvious benefits of solar power haven\u2019t gone away even if the price may be higher than it was at the start of the year. It remains the fastest and cheapest way to add new power in many countries, and can be installed on a grid or individual basis. Not to mention its utility in remote areas with poor generation resources, where it can reduce dependency on fossil fuels. This year, clean energy think-tank <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/ember-energy.org\/latest-insights\/the-year-sunlight-went-global-how-the-paris-agreement-brought-solar-power-to-the-world\/\" data-i13n=\"cpos:30;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Ember;cpos:30;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">Ember<\/a> reported on the growth of solar power in the last decade, and how it went from adding just one percent of global power generation in 2015 to 8.8 percent in the first half of 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 leading-7 text-[18px] md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0 charcoal-color\">\u201cAI demand for electricity is the macro driver of US made solar,\u201d said Rob Gardner, VP at the Solar Manufacturers for America Coalition. \u201cAI investments can\u2019t deliver expected returns without quickly deployed power, and US solar is the fastest and cheapest to deploy,\u201d he said. Earlier this year, the <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/articles\/energy-department-announces-fusion-science-and-technology-roadmap-accelerate-commercial\" data-i13n=\"cpos:32;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Department of Energy;cpos:32;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">Department of Energy<\/a> released a <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2025-10\/fusion-s%26t-roadmap-101625.pdf\" data-i13n=\"cpos:33;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:roadmap;cpos:33;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">roadmap<\/a> to get fusion out of the lab and into the world. It wants to coordinate the remaining resources of the federal government to close the fusion world\u2019s \u201ccritical science, materials and technology gaps.\u201d In the next three years, officials have been tasked with designing facilities for reactors and developing sources of fuel. Within the next decade, it\u2019s hoped the government will be able to offer large-scale fuel cycle plants to help private sector plants start operations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 leading-7 text-[18px] md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0 charcoal-color\">If fusion power can be harnessed, it has many of the same upsides as nuclear fission with a lot fewer downsides. If nuclear fission harnesses the energy released when an atom is broken apart, then fusion harnesses the energy released when two smaller atoms are smashed together to create a larger one. It harnesses the same principle as you\u2019ll find inside our sun: Superheated hydrogen atoms fusing to create helium. And while nuclear fusion requires radioactive material, we can source deuterium and tritium from water and lithium.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 leading-7 text-[18px] md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0 charcoal-color\"><a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iter.org\/fusion-energy\/advantages-fusion\" data-i13n=\"cpos:34;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:ITER;cpos:34;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">ITER<\/a> (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) is a giant experimental fusion reactor under construction in France which, when operational, will be the world\u2019s largest. It is backed by a coalition of nations, including the US, EU and China, and has the aim of both generating power and developing the technologies necessary to make Fusion a reality. The organization claims that there is enough of both materials available on the planet to run fusion plants for at least a thousand years, if not longer. There are also a raft of safety benefits, as there\u2019s no creation of the sort of long-lived and dangerous waste associated with nuclear power, no risk of a meltdown, and its raw materials can\u2019t be used to make weapons.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 leading-7 text-[18px] md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0 charcoal-color\">But while fusion is entirely <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/first-fusion-reaction-ignition-155212785.html\" data-i13n=\"cpos:35;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:possible;cpos:35;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">possible<\/a>, and on paper could be the salve to all of the world\u2019s energy ills, it\u2019s not yet a reality. There are a large number of engineering challenges sitting between us and a viable commercial reactor. The shift that has happened this year is that fusion is now being treated as a \u201cstrategic national priority,\u201d according to the <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iaea.org\/newscenter\/news\/fusion-energy-in-2025-six-global-trends-to-watch\" data-i13n=\"cpos:36;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:International Atomic Energy Agency.;cpos:36;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">International Atomic Energy Agency.<\/a> More than 160 fusion facilities are operational worldwide, each one looking to explore ways of solving the hard problems standing between us and limitless power.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 leading-7 text-[18px] md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0 charcoal-color\">But as well as ITER, there are other major nations working to build out their own fusion capacity. The biggest would likely be China\u2019s Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST) which has already set a record for energy generation. At the start of this year, it was able to produce a <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2025-01-chinese-artificial-sun-fusion-power.html\" data-i13n=\"cpos:37;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:steady state for 1,066 seconds;cpos:37;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">steady state for 1,066 seconds<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 leading-7 text-[18px] md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0 charcoal-color\">But what we are seeing now, which may offer some degree of hope, is the surge in interest from the private sector. Companies like <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/cfs.energy\/\" data-i13n=\"cpos:38;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Commonwealth Fusion;cpos:38;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">Commonwealth Fusion<\/a>, <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/typeoneenergy.com\/\" data-i13n=\"cpos:39;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Type One Energy;cpos:39;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">Type One Energy<\/a>, <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/science\/a-private-start-up-called-helion-aims-to-have-a-working-fusion-reactor-by-2028-142020697.html\" data-i13n=\"cpos:40;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:Helion;cpos:40;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Helion<\/a> and <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/world-nuclear-news.org\/articles\/pacific-fusion-to-open-facility-in-new-mexico\" data-i13n=\"cpos:41;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Pacific Fusion;cpos:41;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">Pacific Fusion<\/a> are all working on their own fusion facilities. These projects have received billions in funding, but it\u2019s likely all will need time to work out if their approaches are viable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 leading-7 text-[18px] md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0 charcoal-color\">Stuart White is a spokesperson for <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/tokamakenergy.com\/\" data-i13n=\"cpos:42;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Tokamak Energy;cpos:42;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">Tokamak Energy<\/a>, a British-Japanese startup spun out from the UK\u2019s Atomic Energy Authority which is developing its own fusion technologies. In 2022, the company\u2019s own reactor was able to reach a plasma temperature of 100 million degrees celsius. \u201cIt\u2019s an incredible achievement but that isn\u2019t going to power homes around the UK or anywhere,\u201d he said. White believes the fusion world will spend the next decade \u201cscaling up,\u201d projects to find the right pathway to building commercial reactors. He cited national programs, like the UK\u2019s STEP which is targeted to begin working in 2040, while the US\u2019 plan for the mid-2030s he feels is \u201caggressive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 leading-7 text-[18px] md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0 charcoal-color\">White also explained that, as equally important as solving the key physics issues, is building out the supply chain to actually make the equipment. He cited the importance of manufacturing in Japan and China to produce the hardware necessary to build fusion reactors. And that this process, while time consuming now, will help accelerate the eventual development of the technology down the line. White added that another positive sign is that regulators aren\u2019t likely to want to scrutinize fusion reactors with the same intensity as they do nuclear reactors. That will both speed up the construction of new facilities and reduce costs when they do eventually enter service.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 leading-7 text-[18px] md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0 charcoal-color\">What\u2019s clear, however, is that Fusion is not going to be able to swoop in and decarbonize the world\u2019s energy needs in the sort of time scale it\u2019s likely to be required. (White said it is likely to arrive in time to complement other clean sources of energy over the next half century, rather than so quickly that every other power station gets mothballed instantly.)
