Tmar explains why AV1 now accounts for 70% of video delivered on Facebook, whether VOD or live on Messenger, and why his team has been pushing it for several years now.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Why AV1?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozer asks, \u201cWhy don\u2019t you tell us a little bit about what Meta is doing with AV1?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAt Meta, we started pushing AV1 in VOD on Reels since [the] 2021-2022 timeframe,\u201d Tmar explains. \u201cAnd we started with iOS where we pushed AV1 decoding in software at the time with an awesome open source library called \u2026 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.videolan.org\/projects\/dav1d.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"dav1d\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dav1d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and using the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aomedia.org\/blog%20posts\/SVT-AV1-V3_0-is-Now-Available\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"SVT-AV1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SVT-AV1<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> open source encoder on the software side. We deployed \u2026 AV1 and what we refer to as our premium encoding.\u201d He suggests reading the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.fb.com\/2023\/02\/21\/video-engineering\/av1-codec-facebook-instagram-reels\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Engineering at Meta blog post\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Engineering at Meta blog post<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the subject for more information<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tmar notes that for a video uploaded to Meta, \u201cif it\u2019s viewed only by a small number of viewers, then they get the basic encoding because their cost of distribution is not too high. If they\u2019re viewed by so many, maybe thousands or millions of people, then they get what\u2019s called a premium encoding where we maintain a good quality and reduce the bitrate so that we get a much better, much faster distribution.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Initially, AV1 was seen \u201cas a quality-boosting tool,\u201d but Tmar and his team found that it\u2019s dependent on user needs\u2014for example, in North America, users tend to appreciate quality more because phone technology is so advanced. In other regions, users \u201cappreciate that bitrate reduction so that they can literally get the video [at all], especially with the very low bandwidth networks. And the rest is kind of somewhere in between. So we don\u2019t really have a flat number on bitrate savings because it\u2019s tuned differently for different apps, different surfaces, different regions, depending on the needs of the users for those regions,\u201d he says. Tmar references the blog post again; it shows that when using \u201cthe AV1 screensharing tool, you can go up to maybe even 60% on top of even VP9 in that space.\u201d Tmar sees these as \u201cgreat results.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>AV1 at Meta Today<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tmar looks at the present moment: He\u2019s \u201chappy to say that AV1 covers about 70% of all of Meta\u2019s watch, which means that doing simple math, if we have about three billion users, every user, every daily active user watches one minute of video per day, that\u2019s 70% of three billion minutes of video basically.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozer wonders if he\u2019s referring to Reels or the entire catalog, and Tmar clarifies, \u201cYeah, it\u2019s pretty much everything now. So Reels, Stories, feed on the video on demand space.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat about live video? What\u2019s your take on when that will happen?\u201d Ozer asks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tmar isn\u2019t able to answer that, he says, but he does note that Meta is \u201cseeing great results for AV1 on video calling.\u201d He explains, \u201cToday with Messenger, you\u2019re probably using AV1 in some space or the other. Especially with its screensharing tools and lower bitrate, it allows calls to be much smoother, [and have] less freezes, less jitters, longer calls. So all of those are benefits that we are seeing.\u201d He hopes to be able to publish results on this topic soon.
