He wonders, Which is the best approach?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou can spin the Rubik\u2019s Cube and surface [content] to people in different ways,\u201d he continues. \u201cAnd our data suggests that there\u2019s a huge difference in the appeal depending on how you surface that piece of content.\u201d Giegengack points to the practice of breaking <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=RaUBl4vnQoY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"beat the buzzr gamified fast laura florence fremantle\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Family Feud<\/span><\/em><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=RaUBl4vnQoY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"beat the buzzr gamified fast laura florence fremantle\"> into clips as smart because it showcases the best one-liners or outrageous moments, so \u201cyou\u2019ll get a whole different set of people that will watch<\/a> that than would tune in to watch an episode,\u201d he believes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The community aspect also brings in viewers: \u201cThe fact that you can tap into this content that has a community to it, even if it hasn\u2019t been activated in a long time, [shows] that interest is still there,\u201d Giegengack asserts. \u201cI think that the opportunity, especially to find the passionate communities that exist around some of this catalog content, like a <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gunsmoke<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, that\u2019s a huge and almost completely untapped opportunity in TV right now.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avery agrees, adding the example of MMA fighting to that. \u201cIt pays to not try to be everything for everyone, to find that passionate audience and create an amazing experience for them, right?\u201d she confirms.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>The Boost of a Built-In Community<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Giegengack says, \u201cThe stuff that we\u2019re seeing that kind of surprises people are shows \u2026 or even content or creators that have a built-in, highly engaged community.\u201d For example, \u201cwhen <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Last of Us <\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">came out on HBO, that was the second-biggest debut on HBO Max that they\u2019d ever had after <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">House of the Dragon<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And then the jump from episode one to episode two was the biggest jump between episodes in the history of HBO for any show ever.\u201d He notes that that surprised a lot of critics. \u201cBut if you dig down into the background, it makes a lot of sense, that <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Last of Us<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is obviously based on a video game\u201d that\u2019s been popular with tens of millions of people for more than a decade.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He continues, \u201cThey spent 60 bucks on the game. They spent 12 to 18 hours working their way through the campaign. That\u2019s if they only played it once. And so they were really immersed in this community, this story, these characters. And so of course, if someone goes and puts that on television, they\u2019re going to come out of the woodwork and sign up for HBO Max &#8230; and watch it. That surprised all the people who aren\u2019t video gamers and who didn\u2019t play <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Last of Us<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. All those people saw the 100% Rotten Tomatoes reviews and they came in and watched the episodes after that and turned it into a phenomenon.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avery chimes in, \u201c<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Last of Us<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has this huge franchise, but not to mention the fact that it\u2019s just a world-class, well-made show.
