Levine and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/sean-p-mccarthy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"YouTube Head of OTT Live Engineering Sean McCarthy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">YouTube Head of OTT Live Engineering Sean McCarthy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> explore what workflow and architecture elements constitute the middle mile and what it takes to navigate middle-mile variability most effectively origin-to-edge and designing workflows that scale in this conversation with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/bhaveshupadhyaya\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"SVTA Subject Matter Expert Bhavesh Upadhyaya\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SVTA Subject Matter Expert Bhavesh Upadhyaya<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.streamingmedia.com\/Articles\/News\/Online-Video-News\/ICYMI-Streaming-Media-Connect-February-2026-173683.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Streaming Media Connect 2026\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Streaming Media Connect 2026<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Middle-Mile Variance<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Upadhyaya says that while certain aspects of the end-to-end workflow are solved, there are problems that crop up with the ingest process. He asks Levine where he sees the problems originate and where his <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cachefly.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"CacheFly\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CacheFly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> customers are looking for solutions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Levine replies, \u201cI don\u2019t want to overstate the ease and simplicity of delivery at scale, but I find myself saying more and more that the concept of which <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.streamingmedia.com\/Articles\/Columns\/Streams-of-Thought\/Is-This-the-End-of-the-CDN-As-We-Know-It-167732.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"end of the cdn as we know it\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDN<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can deliver an object better [is] \u2026 maybe not the most recurring problem these days. And so what we find ourselves working on most, especially when it comes to live events, is the reliability and the resiliency \u2026 around actually that middle mile\/first mile and making sure that that stream can get into RAM at all the edges.\u201d He notes that while the end user experience is relatively predictable, the middle mile has a lot of variance. \u201cAnd so the good days and bad days for us that we see for live events tend to show up a lot more on that workflow from the second it hits the glass on the camera to when it makes it to a CDN edge.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is when CacheFly and its customers focus on resiliency, \u201cwhether that is more aggressive connectivity in terms of active backup, be that getting cross connects in for events and then backing it up over transit.\u201d There are CacheFly customers \u201cwe\u2019re testing, doing parallel fetching from, and first success wins when it comes to fetching stuff from their origin,\u201d Levine shares. The company is \u201cstarting to treat the concept of a cache miss as a first-class citizen, and what [that would] look like in the same way that an object from RAM in cache is kind of treated like a first-class citizen today.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Struggles of Scale<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Upadhyaya invites McCarthy to give his perspective, saying he\u2019s \u201cbeen working on something like this as an industry standard as well too, in terms of looking at ingest and onboarding of streams, etc.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McCarthy confirms, \u201cIt\u2019s definitely relevant, I\u2019d say, to \u2026 optimize the furthest-edge cache footprint and delivering bits from the RAM, like [Levine] was saying, down the wire as quickly as possible.\u201d He sees it as \u201ca connectivity to your live origin optimization.\u201d This is something YouTube is aware of, McCarthy continues, but YouTube owns and operates its own delivery network, so \u201cit\u2019s architected slightly different than if you were to connect your origin to several CDN vendors. We don\u2019t necessarily have that problem, but we absolutely have the adverse problem, which is getting content into our live origin. So it\u2019s an acquisition challenge.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McCarthy explains that historically, YouTube has approached this by meeting its top-tier premium broadcast customers \u201cwhere they are, to build fiber connectivity from their data center to ours, or to co-lo[cate] in their data center in order to cross-connect and get those bits on our network as soon as possible and have dedicated fiber\u2014something reliable, resilient, what have you, and fast, but that doesn\u2019t scale with a large number of content partners.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McCarthy\u2019s take as he describes it is, \u201cIf we as an industry have done so much work to create internet-native formats, be it <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.streamingmedia.com\/Articles\/Post\/Blog\/Why-SRT-Is-Powering-the-Next-Generation-of-Streaming-Workflows-170223.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"why srt is powering the next generation of streaming workflows\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SRT<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or \u2026 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.streamingmedia.com\/Articles\/Editorial\/Featured-Articles\/Media-Over-QUIC-and-the-Future-of-High-Quality-Low-Latency-Streaming-167165.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Media over QUIC\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Media over QUIC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where there is a level of resiliency, it\u2019s easier to operate than a multicast <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.streamingmedia.com\/Articles\/Editorial\/Featured-Articles\/The-Algorithm-Series-QUIC-Ways-to-Stream-148688.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"media over quic streaming\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UDP<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> environment, how can we leverage the strength of the software network protocols and actually get adoption such that we can better scale our ingestion platform?\u201d He adds that performance is a key part of it. \u201cSo we\u2019re still having to work content partner by content partner [to] prove out the performance [and] prove out the technology to migrate them off of these legacy point-to-point fiber systems.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/go2sm.com\/526\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Join us February 24-26, 2026 for more thought leadership, actionable insights, and lively debate at Streaming Media Connect 2026!
