One could argue that live-streamed sports aren\u2019t really live in this scenario. But given the costs and challenges of lowering <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.streamingmedia.com\/Articles\/Post\/Blog\/Why-the-Gap-Between-the-Game-and-Your-Screen-Is-a-Business-Problem-173844.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"why the gap between the game and your screen is a business problem\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">latency<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is it really worth the investment, or should sports streamers be prioritizing other engineering challenges or elements of the fan experience? <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/mattstagg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"MTech Sport\u2019s Matt Stagg\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MTech Sport\u2019s Matt Stagg<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/james-pearce-3927264\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"DAZN\u2019s James Pearce\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DAZN\u2019s James Pearce<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/ianparr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"BT Group\u2019s Ian Parr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BT Group\u2019s Ian Parr<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/coreyhsmith\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"TATA Communications\u2019 Corey Smith\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TATA Communications\u2019 Corey Smith<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> discuss the current business case for lowering sports streaming latency at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.streamingmedia.com\/Articles\/News\/Online-Video-News\/ICYMI-Streaming-Media-Connect-February-2026-173683.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Streaming Media Connect 2026\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Streaming Media Connect 2026<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>The Specific Conditions for Worrying About Latency\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stagg asks, \u201cWhat\u2019s the business case and how do you justify an investment to lower the latency of your streams?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DAZN has kept an eye on this issue, Pearce says. Latency isn\u2019t bad in every scenario, despite the rise of social media and its instant notifications, he notes, but one use case proved that when rights were split across two broadcasters, one a traditional satellite broadcaster, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.streamingmedia.com\/Categories\/OTT-TV_430.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"OTT streaming\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OTT<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was slower. \u201cSo we did see that there was a business value in trying to reduce that latency so you could be comparable,\u201d Pearce shares.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The challenges around low latency stem from personalization and ad insertion, Pearce continues, \u201cand some of the protocols struggle, I think, when you start looking at some of the low-latency protocols. So it\u2019s definitely not an easy thing to fix, but there are certain use cases where I think where your content is on the platform compared to another platform, then it really stands out and makes sense to do it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stagg mentions that it\u2019s not truly live sports when one viewer hears their neighbor shout at something they haven\u2019t seen yet. He laughs that even his fellow pubgoers annoy the viewers next door sometimes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>How Latency Protocols Affect the Network\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stagg invites Parr to contribute. Echoing Pearce, Parr adds that another annoyance is a tweet spoiling a goal that hasn\u2019t been on TV yet. He explains, \u201cI can understand the attraction of wanting to not be 45-plus seconds behind the live edge of a sports stream for the reasons that we just outlined. And so I can understand the customer experience benefits of that.\u201d But network operators need \u201cto understand how the low-latency protocols affect flow and network traffic engineering options available on the network as well, particularly when things are starting to go wrong.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parr has seen evidence that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.streamingmedia.com\/Articles\/Editorial\/Featured-Articles\/Media-Over-QUIC-and-the-Future-of-High-Quality-Low-Latency-Streaming-167165.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"media over quic and the future of high-quality low-latency streaming\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UDP-based distribution protocols<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are less network-efficient and cause greater load on the network than standard TCP or HLS protocols that are easy to manage and monitor, he says. \u201cSo there is some emergence and some concerns about the increasing load price by lower-latency streaming, but we\u2019ve not seen enough of what I would call ultra-low-latency streaming \u2026 yet to have really informed data,\u201d he concludes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Figuring Out the Nuances<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smith chimes in, \u201cIt\u2019s easier to control your latency when you\u2019re packaging the ads for a one-to-many type of audience. When you start getting into client-side ad insertion, that\u2019s where things get a little bit wonky too, because now all of a sudden the ad load, there\u2019s an intrinsic delay sometimes in those apps loading. And then the return to live broadcast, sometimes you\u2019re coming back into the opening action of whatever\u2019s coming next.\u201d On the client side, he says, SSL overhead, encryption, and DRM decode are factors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSo there\u2019s any number of different things that don\u2019t exist in the traditional broadcast world where my direct TV downlink is a private point-to-point connection,\u201d he continues. \u201cMy traditional broadband television provider is a private network as well, where the internet is this open kind of playground. So I think that there\u2019s a lot of nuances to IP streaming that we still have to figure out.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smith wonders, \u201cWhat does low-latency HLS really mean when it comes to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.streamingmedia.com\/Articles\/Columns\/Streams-of-Thought\/Is-This-the-End-of-the-CDN-As-We-Know-It-167732.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"end of the cdn as we know it\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDN<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> side of it and being able to support it at scale? Do we all just go to an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.streamingmedia.com\/Articles\/Post\/Blog\/Why-SRT-Is-Powering-the-Next-Generation-of-Streaming-Workflows-170223.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"why srt is powering the next generation of streaming workflows\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SRT<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> stream distribution point to point to a customer endpoint and forget the HTTPS or HTTP delivery?\u201d He reiterates that with UDP versus TC\/PIP, there are trade-offs, and more R&amp;D needs to be done.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cUntil we can actually get people from not screaming at my neighbor\u2019s house when somebody makes a goal to me watching it 30 seconds later, I think that that\u2019s going to be a continued problem,\u201d Smith predicts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>When the Problem Must Be Fixed\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smith is unconvinced that allocating money to solving this problem isn\u2019t always immediately necessary. \u201cThe reason I say that is because you only really need to have that real-time IP streaming factor if things are simulcast on a traditional delivery network and there\u2019s gambling involved, right? When there\u2019s actually transactional betting or something happening in the background that\u2019s now a non-competitive type of created situation where now all of a sudden there\u2019s real stakes, if you will.\u201d He knows some gamblers consider the stakes life or death.
