What\u2019s more, she tells <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/magnus-svensson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Eyevinn Technology Media Solution Specialist Magnus Svensson\">Eyevinn Technology\u00a0Media Solution Specialist Magnus Svensson<\/a>, some aspects of the workflow will always remain on-prem even as operations shift, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/jefkethley\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Live Sports LLC Executive Director Jef Kethley\">Live Sports LLC Executive Director Jef Kethley<\/a> chimes in that the biggest challenges in transitioning to cloud stem from the orchestrational demands of building out new infrastructure regardless of the hardware\/software, cloud\/on-prem mix.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Operational Shifts<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.streamingmediaglobal.com\/Articles\/Editorial\/Short-Cuts\/Eyevinn-Technologys-Magnus-Svensson-Talks-the-Need-for-Modular-Broadcast-Tech-Development-at-Streaming-Media-2025-172377.aspx?utm_source=related_articles&amp;utm_medium=gutenberg&amp;utm_campaign=editors_selection\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Eyevinn Technology\u2019s Magnus Svensson Talks the Need for Modular Broadcast Tech Development at Streaming Media 2025\">Svensson<\/a> initiates the discussion by asking Madelen to offer some insights on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.streamingmedia.com\/Articles\/Editorial\/Featured-Articles\/A-Broadcasters-Cloud-Migration-Primer-159023.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"A Broadcaster\u2019s Cloud Migration Primer\">shift from hardware to software-based streaming architecture<\/a> at SVT, who assures them that they \u201cdid a lot more\u201d than replace hardware with software.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe bigger shift is operational,\u201d she maintains. \u201cIt\u2019s so important to not focus on taking functionality from hardware to software. It&#8217;s about how you work in the control room or on site, wherever you are.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The real advantage of moving some infrastructure to the cloud, she continues, is not so much the ability to implement remote operations as the \u201cflexibility to be anywhere. If you need to be on site, be on site, but you can also be in the control room in your TV [studio], wherever it is.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ottoson goes on to explain that because SVT is a public service, \u201csecurity-wise, we need to have a lot of things on-prem.\u201d But regardless of how much of your operations remain on-prem or move to the cloud, \u201cyou have to shift in how you work and be able to use the opportunity with the software to have new roles. And also the location of where everyone is can shift from what we are used to. So I think it\u2019s a really big opportunity, and one should really take care of it when they\u2019re moving from hardware to software because, operationally, it&#8217;s a really big shift.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Turning to Kethley, Svensson says, \u201cJef, I know you&#8217;re doing mostly everything remotely. I think you\u2019re rarely on site nowadays. So what\u2019s your take?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs much as we\u2019re already doing remotely,\u201d Kethley replies, \u201cthere\u2019s still plenty of other opportunities to do other parts of [our productions] remotely. It depends on the scale of the events that we\u2019re involved with, of course. With me doing mostly live sports these days, there is something about having people with hands-on [roles] onsite. And there\u2019s just a certain amount that we have to have there. We\u2019ve taken it a step further in our world. We were remotely operating cameras and driving them as if we were on site because that\u2019s what we invested in, being able to do that. That was a game-changer for us.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Orchestral Maneuvers<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As much as Kethley acknowledges that moving operations off-site for live sports productions is something Live Sports LLC was \u201cable to be very competitive with,\u201d he agrees with Ottoson that \u201cthe bigger part\u201d of the shift to cloud \u201cis not about software\u201d or \u201cworking it from anywhere.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He says that the most significant change he sees is on \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.streamingmedia.com\/Articles\/News\/Online-Video-News\/Generative-AI-Got-the-Hype-Agentic-AI-Will-Do-the-Heavy-Lifting-for-Live-Sports-174882.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Generative AI Got the Hype, Agentic AI Will Do the Heavy Lifting for Live Sports\">the orchestration side of building out the infrastructure<\/a>, whether it is onsite, on-prem, in cloud, private cloud, public cloud, whatever it happens to be. That part is our biggest challenge and we\u2019re still trying to solve that part. Being able to connect A to B to C to D and being able to do that efficiently. So what if I could turn on a hundred machines in an hour? I\u2019d still have to connect a hundred machines, and that takes span-hours\u2014unless it could be automated. And that\u2019s where [AI] could possibly help us in that realm and that\u2019s what we&#8217;re really investigating. So I think it\u2019s more than just taking the tool, converting it into a virtual tool, then using that virtual tool as software, wherever it happens to run.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kethley goes so far as to contend that for his company, the on-prem\/cloud question is \u201cirrelevant. I don\u2019t care where it runs as long I could get signals in and out with reliability and security, as Madelen says. [Security] is something really big on our side too, especially when we&#8217;re dealing with betting houses and overseas gaming that we don\u2019t necessarily have here in the US, but we are feeding those.
