Ottosson goes on to detail the types of reskilling that can be particularly difficult for producers with long histories in the business and experience with more traditional workflows, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/jefkethley\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"LiveSports, LLC\u2019s Executive Director and President Jef Kethley\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LiveSports, LLC\u2019s Executive Director and President Jef Kethley<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> affirms many of her points about the challenges of expanding existing production skillsets.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>The Importance of Embracing New Knowledge<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Svensson opens the conversation by asking <a href=\"https:\/\/www.streamingmedia.com\/Articles\/ReadArticle.aspx?ArticleID=174915\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Streaming Cloud Migration is More About Ops and Orchestration than Tech\">Ottosson to talk about SVT\u2019s streaming<\/a> of the Olympics. \u201cHow do you work with the staff, and what new skills are needed to be able to produce Olympics in the new way?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ottosson says that new skills are definitely involved because her team had to keep track of not only the operating side, but also the support and monitoring sides. \u201cEverything is just one role nowadays,\u201d she notes. The team members need to be able to ask the right questions to help solve inevitable problems that occur. They must be open to learning new things, she adds. Changing the way a control room works in terms of new feeds\u2014such as going from SDI to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.streamingmedia.com\/Articles\/Post\/Blog\/Why-SRT-Is-Powering-the-Next-Generation-of-Streaming-Workflows-170223.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"why srt is powering the next generation of streaming workflows\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SRT<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014can be scary.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ottosson believes this shift could be more difficult for someone who\u2019s been in the business for years than a newcomer. \u201cBut what we can see is that we have people all around the company who\u2019re not used to being in the production side, who\u2019re actually curious and want to be a part of it. So we have a few people coming in from \u2026 different parts of SVT that want to learn, which is really cool,\u201d she shares. \u201cSo it\u2019s really a matter of, embrac[e it] and keep trying.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Encouraging New Entrants to the Business to Be Multifaceted<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Svensson turns to Kethley to note that Kethley was nodding along with Ottosson\u2019s answer. \u201cYou also mentioned that you like to have the same crew regardless of technology, but are there any new skills or any new adoptions that you have made across the years here?\u201d Svensson asks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kethley admits he\u2019s been in the production business for more than 40 years, and he never imagined how much would change in that time. He now considers his job \u201conline broadcasting\u201d because he approaches streaming from a broadcasting standpoint. When he brings new people into the business, he says, \u201cI find that it is challenging to invigorate younger people so that they understand that this is a fun job where, \u2018Hey, we can jump into this. Don\u2019t you want to work 40 hours in the first three days of the week? I mean, that sounds like fun, right?\u2019 So it takes a little bit to get them into the flow of things.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After new employees understand how to leverage the technology, they\u2019re more comfortable. \u201cSo they are able to approach it from, \u2018Oh, I can do the audio here. Oh, I can do the video here. I can do the graphics here. Oh, okay, no problem. It\u2019s not a big deal.\u2019 Whereas with some of the older\u2014I would just say more in their ways\u2014folk, it\u2019s their job. \u2026 [They\u2019re] like, \u2018No, I just do audio. I don\u2019t know \u2026 that video stuff. It\u2019s a new fad. It\u2019ll die.\u2019 But when we\u2019re trying to bring new people in, we want them to be multifaceted. So I\u2019m looking to hire IT people. I\u2019m looking to hire people that I never thought \u2026 would be the ideal person because they do need to understand that,\u201d Kethley explains. \u201cSo it\u2019s a continuing challenge.
